Societa` Canottieri Firenze, Florence Rowing Club, began in 1886. In 1887, for the inauguration of the new façade of the Duomo, they held their first Regatta on the Arno. Rowing on the Arno I love to watch the rowers, early in the morning, as I have my walk. Canottiera also means singlet and presumably comes from the rower’s garb. Florence Straw Market and The Porcellino

The Straw Market of Florence No holiday in Florence is complete without a visit to The Straw Market. Florence to Sydney. In front of The Sydney Hospital is an exact replica of the boar, the Porcellino, which gives its name to the Florence Straw Market or Mercato del Porcellino in Piazza del Mercato Nuovo which was what the market is really called. The Florentine one was sculpted in 1547 or 1612, depending on whom  you believe, by Pietro Battista Tacca. A holiday apartment I Florence is a wonderful base for getting out of town too

Florence is much more than narrow medieval streets of brick & tile & stone & art. It's good to get out and about in the parks & gardens & the surrounding countryside of the dolci colline or sweet hills which ring the city.
